XBIS vs CT Scanner — What's the Difference?
Last updated: 6 Jul 2026Reviewed by Ms. Rubab Nizami, Lead AVSEC Faculty
In short
An XBIS produces a flat, two-dimensional X-ray of a bag that a screener interprets. A CT scanner builds a rotatable three-dimensional image and can automatically detect explosives, so passengers may not need to remove laptops and liquids. CT is the more advanced successor to XBIS.
XBIS vs CT scanner — side by side
| XBIS | CT scanner | |
|---|---|---|
| Image | 2D X-ray | 3D rotatable image |
| Explosive detection | Manual by the screener | Automatic (EDS) |
| Passenger effort | Take out laptops and liquids | May keep them in the bag |
| India status | Widely used | Being introduced at busier airports |
Which should you use?
CT scanners are the upgrade to XBIS — richer images and automatic explosive detection — but XBIS is still the workhorse at most Indian checkpoints.
Quick answers
Do I still take my laptop out with a CT scanner?
Where a CT scanner is in use you may be told to leave laptops and liquids in the bag — follow the signage at that lane.
