The Insider Threat in Aviation Security

Last updated: 6 Jul 2026Reviewed by Ms. Rubab Nizami, Lead AVSEC Faculty

In short

An insider threat is the risk from a person with legitimate airport access — staff or contractor — who misuses it to harm aviation, whether deliberately or by being manipulated. Because insiders bypass the outer defences, access discipline and a strong challenge culture are the main protections.

What it is
Misuse of legitimate access
Main defences
Access discipline, challenge culture
Key rule
Always display your AEP; challenge those who don't

Why is the insider threat so dangerous?

An insider already has trusted access, so they can bypass screening and reach secure areas that outsiders cannot. That is why a single careless or malicious insider can defeat expensive outer defences, and why every worker's discipline matters.

How do you reduce the insider threat?

Reduce it with access discipline: always display your AEP, never let anyone tailgate through a secure door, never share your pass, and challenge anyone not displaying a valid pass. Report concerns about a colleague through the proper channel.

At a glance

  • Insider threat = misuse of legitimate access.
  • Insiders can bypass outer defences.
  • Defences: display your AEP, stop tailgating, challenge, report.
