Types of Threats to Civil Aviation
Last updated: 6 Jul 2026Reviewed by Ms. Rubab Nizami, Lead AVSEC Faculty
In short
Civil aviation faces several threat types: hijacking, bombs and IEDs, the insider threat, unattended baggage, drones, cyber attacks and hoax calls. All are forms of unlawful interference, and awareness — spotting and reporting early — is the defence every airport worker provides.

What are the main threats to an aircraft?
The main threats are hijacking, bombs or IEDs hidden in baggage or cargo, and the insider threat from a trusted worker. Each aims to harm the aircraft, its people or the airport, and each is countered by screening, access control and vigilance.
| Threat | What it is |
|---|---|
| Hijacking | Seizing control of an aircraft |
| IED / bomb | A hidden explosive device |
| Insider threat | Misuse of legitimate access |
| Unattended baggage | A bag left alone — never touch, report it |
| Drones | Unmanned aircraft near the airport |
| Cyber | Attacks on aviation systems |
| Hoax call | A false threat, treated as real |
How do airport workers help stop these threats?
Every worker is a sensor. Noticing an unattended bag, a person without a valid pass, or unusual behaviour, and reporting it immediately, stops most threats early. The golden rule is simple: See It, Say It, Secure It.
