Cabin Baggage vs Checked Baggage — Rules in India
Last updated: 8 Jul 2026Reviewed by Ms. Rubab Nizami, Lead AVSEC Faculty
In short
Cabin (hand) baggage travels with you and faces the 100ml liquids rule and sharp-object limits, but it must hold spare lithium batteries and power banks. Checked baggage goes in the hold with more room for liquids and sharp items, but no spare batteries or power banks. What is banned depends on which bag.
Cabin baggage vs Checked baggage — side by side
| Cabin baggage | Checked baggage | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it goes | With you in the cabin | In the aircraft hold |
| Liquids | 100ml per container | Larger quantities allowed |
| Sharp objects | Not allowed | Allowed, wrapped |
| Power banks & spare batteries | Required here | Not allowed |
Which should you use?
Batteries and power banks in the cabin; large liquids and sharp objects in checked. Check each item before you pack.
Quick answers
Can I put a power bank in checked baggage?
No — power banks and spare lithium batteries must travel in cabin baggage only, never in the hold.
