Power Bank Rules on Flights in India

Last updated: 6 Jul 2026Reviewed by Ms. Rubab Nizami, Lead AVSEC Faculty

In short

On Indian flights, power banks must travel in cabin baggage only — never checked. Up to 100Wh is allowed freely, 100–160Wh needs airline approval, and above 160Wh is forbidden. Since 2025, several Indian airlines also bar using or charging power banks in flight.

Where must a power bank be carried on an Indian flight?

A power bank must be in your cabin baggage, never in checked baggage. Because it is a lithium battery, a fire must be reachable by the crew — impossible in the hold. Since 2025 many Indian airlines also require it kept in the seat pocket, switched off, not in the overhead bin.

What is the watt-hour limit for power banks?

Up to 100Wh is allowed without approval. From 100Wh to 160Wh you need the airline's approval and are usually limited to two units. Above 160Wh, power banks are not permitted for passengers on Indian flights.

At a glance

  • Power banks: cabin baggage only.
  • ≤100Wh free; 100–160Wh with approval; >160Wh forbidden.
  • In-flight use or charging is restricted on many Indian airlines since 2025.
